What To Consider When Researching WAHM Opportunities

By

Work at Home QuestionsToday, I am taking an excerpt from my WAHM guide which some of you may already have read.  But, it is just a basic read that is good for anyone who is just starting their search for information about working from home.

Maybe you are still working in a job and would like to start researching what is available.  Or, maybe you are a stay at home mom that would like to make a little extra money.  Whatever the reasons, and wherever you are in your search, this post is just a starting point.  There is no “get rich quick” information – just some basic tips to get you started.

From time to time, I will put more excerpts from my guide up for people to read, so make sure you sign up for email updates from my blog!

How Do I Get Started in my Work At Home Search?

Making the decision to work at home often starts out the same way my own
personal story did – needing some extra income, or a new mom wants the
chance to stay home with her kids, but can’t afford to give up her regular
income. Some women come looking for information because they simply do
not enjoy their jobs anymore, and they want more. They may have always
dreamed of having their own business, and are feeling the urge to give it a try.
The first thing I will suggest for you to do, is sit down and really think about
what you want to do. Do you want a JOB or do you want a BUSINESS? They
are 2 different things, and you need to make sure you are aware of what your
own goals are.

JOBS

**There are many online jobs available, that allow you to work from home.
Some women have been able to convince their employers that they have been
working for, to let them try doing their work at home. If the job allows for this
kind of flexibility, it can work out great where the employee can telecommute.

But, if your job does not have that kind of option, and you are wanting to
remain with the security of a job, that pays you a wage for work that you do,
there are many, many opportunities. Some might require training, such as
transcription or coding jobs, while others are open to anyone willing to learn
what is needed.

For online jobs, just as in the offline world, you will very often need to submit
resumes and even go through interview processes. If you haven’t written a
resume for a long time, just go to Microsoft Office Templates. They have a
whole bunch of templates you can follow to make your resume stand out from
the others. You can choose from basic ones, to specific ones for a type of job
you are applying for.

Remember though, that if you are thinking of getting a “job”, you may be
required to work set hours, and you might need a quiet work environment for
work time. These are factors that need to be taken into account when thinking
of applying for an at home job. Not only that, but quite often, at least when
just getting started – your pay will likely be a lot less than what you are used
to or what you were expecting.

Have realistic ideas of what you want. If you need the flexibility of being able
to work around nap times or family schedules and commitments, perhaps it
might be better to consider a home business that you can run yourself. Or, at
the least, make sure you evaluate any job before taking it to be sure that it
will fit into your plans.

BUSINESS

**If you are wanting to start your own business, you will have a ton of
available resources online at your disposal.

Before you start anything, sit down and really think about what your interests
are. Make a list of your priorities, your passions, and anything that you enjoy
and feel you are good at.

Then, start doing some research and see what others are doing, and what
kinds of business ideas would interest you.

At this point, don’t overanalyze everything too much. Just go with your
instincts, without fretting already over a business name, taxes and all of that
other stuff.

All I can say, is that depending on the business you decide on, and where you live,
everything that is needed to be set up will be different. But, don’t let the fear
of getting everything set up scare you off before you even try. In the end,
once you have made the decision to start a business, everything will start
falling in to place.

Something else to consider, are some basic skills that you should have if you
are going to run a home-based business:

1) Money Management skills . You must be able to focus on the bottom line
and be able to manage your cash flow.

2) Self management skills.  You have to be able to manage your time and
set goals appropriately. Additionally, you have to be able to focus and
know your strengths and weaknesses. Where you are weak, you have to
be willing to seek help.

3) Time management. This is a tough one. There are all types of
distractions when you work from home. You have to be able to keep
them to a minimum and stick to a schedule.

4) Marketing. You have to learn how to get customers on a consistent basis.
This is an integral part of your business.

Find What's Best For YouI just wanted to make sure that as you go through the search for what is right for you, that you understand exactly what you are looking for. You don’t need to know the kind of job you want, or the exact business you will be starting.  But, you do need to define your goals, or you will end up going in circles with your search, always looking for something else that might be a little bit better.

As you are searching, you may come across things you would enjoy, that you would never have even considered before! Don’t be afraid to try something new.

When I started, I could barely turn on a computer. Seriously! The internet scared me, to tell you the truth, and I kind of secretly thought that anyone who worked alot with computers was a bit of a “nerd”. (Shh…don’t ever tell anyone!)

But, I found a real enjoyment for what I am doing. I love learning everything about websites and Search Engine Optimization – all of that stuff that bores a whole lot of people, and 5 years ago, would have bored me too.

So, go out and take a look around. But, don’t get caught up in the search and
never do anything about it. One thing I always try to stress, is that you will
never know what you can do unless you actually do it.

It really is that simple. If you keep going around and dreaming up new ideas,
and buying more stuff that can give you just a bit more information, you will
never actually get “doing”. If you commit to it, and decide that you want to
be working from home – either with an at home job, or your own business –
you need to be prepared to get started somewhere.

You may not be able to just say, “I am quitting my job today, and tomorrow I
will be working from home.” Chances are it won’t be that easy. You may need
to try juggling a couple things first, and maybe even try a couple of different
opportunities to find one that is going to make you happy.

Stick with it, and don’t give up too easily. If you really want to be able to work
at home, it can be done. Many of us have done it before you, and you can do
it too!
